Rush Attack or Slowly But Surely?

The Philippines is still recovering from the previous years’ economic crises. It’s main cities are doing their best to go with the shimmering economic growth. The slow trickle of peso value is giving each city hope for the succeeding years.

For Davao City, growth is crucial. Why? Because Davao is somewhere in between industrial and agricultural. Given the vast land area, Davao can undeniably cater to both. Farm lands and fishing ports go along factories and industrial facilities harmoniously. New ports are built for both industrial and agricultural products. Trade is increasing as the rich Davao resources are becoming more and more accessible.

If Davao would go slow with development, all major city decisions must be well studied and planned. Feasibility studies must be conducted in order to ensure the profitability of each major city project. Where should the funds go and who shall benefit from it? However, too slow might pose a threat of being left behind by other major cities that are also sweet-smelling to international investors.

On the other end, rushing things up is not healthy as well. In my observation, Dabawenyos are highly attracted to new ideas and attractions but their interest also easily die out whenever that ” in thing” becomes obsolete and new ideas come up. Dabawenyos are very picky in choosing what to really patronize, considering also the earning of an average Dabawenyoas it is a big issue in spending.

The worst that could happen in too much industrialization is the threat it brings to the ecosystem. Too much of unchecked factories could easily destroy the clean air and highly potable water that Davao is very proud of.

Somewhere in between maybe. Yes, somewhere in between development and protection of the city’s treasures lies the key to a sustainable development. One that many Dabawenyos like me have longed for years.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
