Game on November 22 – Xavier University Gym

6:00PM Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr vs. Duterte Agilas-Davao

DAVAO CITY – Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr used a strong finishing kick to down Goldstar Hardware Duterte Agilas-Davao, 92-84, and grab Game One of the Mindanao Division Semifinals of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference, Monday night at the Almendras Gym.

Trailing by three with 5:47 left in the game, 71-74, MisOr went on a 21-4 tear powered by Anton Villoria, Ramil Tagupa, Lowell Briones and Frank Nailon. Villoria nailed a triple that gave MisOr the lead for good, 76-74, and 3:56 to play. All the Agilas could do was counter with basket and two free throws by Boboy Berami as the game was blown apart, 92-78.

With the outcome settled, MisOr allowed the Agilas to score the game’s final six points in the last minute of play. A day earlier, MisOr of Gov. Oscar Moreno hacked a close 87-82 decision over the Agilas to close the 30-game classification round of the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping,Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

Coaches Bong Abad of MisOr and Rhoel Josol of the Agilas barely had 24 hours to make adjustments. The Agilas looked headed to grabbing the important win, leading after three periods, 67-65. Berami, Bob Cozy Ilanga and Wynsjohn Te conspired to rally the Agilas from a 40-49 halftime deficit. Ilanga and twin towers Joel Solis and James Razon then helped maintain the lead until Villoria’s killer triple came. Overall, Villoria made 10 of his 12 points in the final quarter.

Game Two of the series is set for November 22 at the Xavier University Gym. Should the Agilas win and stave off extinction, the deciding Game Three will be on Friday (November 23) also at Xavier. The winner will face the waiting MP Warriors-GenSan of Manny Pacquiao for the Mindanao Division championship. Nailon led the way for MisOr with a personal conference-high of 20 points, followed by Briones with 18. Berami equaled his 26-point effort set against M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City last October 11.

Te finished with 13 and Razon with 12, their best efforts thus far in the league.

How They Scored:

6:00PM Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware vs. MP Warriors-GenSan

DAVAO CITY – Valuable playoff position in the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference is at stake on Tuesday night, November 13, when the Goldstar Hardware-backed Duterte Agilas-Davao hosts the MP Warriors-GenSan at the Almendras Gym starting at 6:00PM.

Only two games separate Tuesday night’s protagonists, with the Warriors of boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao leading the Mindanao Division with a 3-4 win-loss card.  The Agilas are at 1-6 while idle Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr of Gov. Oscar Moreno is a game ahead of them at 2-5.  MisOr was playing Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu at press time last night at the Xavier University Gym.

Buoyed by tallying their first ever MVBA franchise win in their last outing against Arthro, 85-83, the Agilas now aim for their first winning streak.  Against Arthro, Coach Rhoel Josol drew great games from scoring machines Fred Sampilo, Bob Cozy Ilanga and Jonjon Gonzaga while burly Boboy Berami combined with twin towers James Razon and Joel Solis in dominating the inside on both ends of the floor.

On the other hand, MisOr is recovering from its recent road trip of the Visayas Division that ended last Wednesday (November 7) where they lost all three games.  Expect Coach Bong Abad to try new combinations with big men Frank Nailon and Randy Sevilla and guards Ramil Tagupa and Rocky Sanchez who were all revelations in the said trip.  Team leaders Lowell Briones and Anton Villoria will continue to assert their veteran presence.  Another key for MisOr is the health of leading scorer Nathaniel Cruz, who sat out two of their last three road games due to a back injury.

All three Mindanao Division squads are expected to give it their all in the final week of the 30-game classification stage.  The balance of the schedule involves the three teams playing amongst themselves so a single win can greatly alter the rankings.

The top teams in each division will earn a bye into the best-of-three division finals. The remaining two teams will slug it out in a separate best-of-three wildcard series with the winner advancing to the division finals.  The Visayas and Mindanao Division champions will meet in another best-of-three affair for the championship of the tournament sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and made possible by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring Water, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

This early, the Visayas Division picture is clear with M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City getting the outright division finals berth.  Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue finished with the same record as M. Lhuillier but lost in the tiebreak thus setting a date with Arthro in the Visayas Division wildcard round starting on November 16 at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center.(Anthony Servinio)

DAVAO CITY – The Goldstar Hardware-backed Duterte Agilas-Davao wasted a 20-point lead in the final period then held their breath before escaping with an 85-83 win over Arthro Kontra Arthritis Friday night at the Davao City Recreation Center in 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) action.

The Agilas saw their 74-54 advantage slowly evaporate in the midst of a blazing Arthro rally anchored on 6′7” Rino Berame, Michael Luga, Ronald Bucao and Bernie Ursal. Bucao sank a triple with nine seconds left to close in by a point, 83-84.

In the ensuing play, Mark Ababon quickly fouled Jonjon Gonzaga who could only make one free throw, 85-83. Coach Al Solis then called his last time. In the final play of the game, the ball went to Bucao who threw up a trey that missed. Doroteo Almacin grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled by James Razon at the buzzer. The big crowd erupted in cheers after Almacin missed his first attempt, allowing the Agilas to register their very first win in the conference after six straight losses.

The Agilas appeared headed for the easy win, leading comfortably all the way during the first three periods. Boboy Berami, Bob Ilanga, Milfred Sampilo and Gonzaga took turns at puncturing the hoop. Ilanga gave the Agilas good momentum by sinking a desperation heave from half-court that beat the halftime buzzer, 46-35.

Arthro beat the Agilas in their initial encounter last October 12 at the New Cebu Coliseum, 104-91.

Berami led the Agilas with 18 followed by Sampilo with 17. Berame paced Arthro with 16 markers, nine coming during their big fourth period rally. Ababon added 14 but was held scoreless in the fourth period. Arthro dropped to 3-5.

Arthro ends its Mindanao trip with a game on November 12 against the 2-4 Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr at the Xavier University Gym starting at 6:00PM. Arthro won their first meeting, 83-70, last November 5 at the New Cebu Coliseum.

In the preliminary game, the City Hall Executives relied on the 34-point production of City Sports Coordinator and Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware Manager Christopher “Bong” Go to thrash the SP Legislators, 95-75.

Go fired eight three-points to set the tone for the Executives en route to their third straight win in the series.

MANDAUE CITY – Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue survived an emotional battle against Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr, 81-77, Wednesday evening in continuing action at the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.
Landmaster led most of the way but mustered enough skills at the end to hack out the win.  MisOr guard Mark Moreño canned a triple with 12 seconds left to threaten, 77-78.  Michael Manigo then scored two free throws off the final foul of Mark Abadia to give Landmaster some cushion, 80-77, at the 11-second mark.  Dennis Concha had the chance to win the game but his triple attempt bounced off the rim and into the waiting hands of Mark Yee, who was quickly fouled by Nathaniel Cruz.  Yee sank a free throw for the final tally.
Landmaster started hot with Bong Marata and Richard Ian Saladaga combining for Landmaster’s biggest lead, 39-26, late in the second quarter.  MisOr kept the pressure with timely hits from Moreño, Frank Nailon and Lowell Briones only to falter in the waning seconds of the game.
With the win, the team of Joe Soberano and Mayor Jonas Cortes equaled the 8-2 win-loss record of M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu.  However, M. Lhuillier holds the tiebreaker thus sending Landmaster into a Wild Card round date with Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu.  MisOr of Gov. Oscar Moreno dropped to 2-5, in the process allowing the 2-4 MP Warriors-GenSan a free ride to the top of the Mindanao Division standings.  The playoffs of the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) will commence in the third week of November also with the backing of ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

CEBU CITY – Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr continues its three-game tour of the Visayas Division when they play league leader M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City Tuesday evening at the New Cebu Coliseum in continuing action at 2007 the Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference.

MisOr of league chairman Gov. Oscar Moreno, the current leader of the Mindanao Division with a 2-2 win-loss record, was playing Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu (2-4) of Jonathan Guardo in uncompleted action from last night in the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and generously supported by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring, Sulpicio Lines, Accel, Cokaliong Shipping, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball.

Meanwhile, the multi-titled Jewelers of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba are on a five-game winning streak but will enter the game shorthanded with absence of swingman Jerry Cavan.  MVBA Visayas Commissioner Jose “Boy” Murillo has suspended Cavan for one-game on top of a 1,000-peso fine for punching Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue player Harold Santa Cruz in their October 16 meeting.  M. Lhuillier beat Landmaster, 86-67, to wrest the best overall record in the league.  Cavan was averaging 13.5 points in M. Lhuillier’s last two games.

In the absence of Cavan, Coach Alcoseba has to tap the best out of team leaders Bruce Dacia (13.9 ppg), Marlon Basco (11.4 ppg)  and Woodrow Enriquez (11.2 ppg).  With such a deep roster, a super game can come any time from Ron Capati (8.4 ppg) and Stephen Padilla (7.4 ppg).

MisOr still pins its fortunes on scoring threats Lowell Briones (10.3 ppg) and Anton Villoria (12.3 ppg) and 6’5” Nathaniel Cruz (14.5 ppg) who can easily rack up double-digits in points and rebounds.  Recently, Coach Bong Abad was able to squeeze out breakout performance from point guard Mark Moreño (8.8 pg) and former San Beda players Mark Apepe (7.0 ppg) and Nick Jabagat (5.5 ppg) as they played key roles in MisOr’s two-game winning run.

Landmaster of Joe Soberano and Mayor Jonas Cortes will have the final crack at MisOr tomorrow at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Center.  Arthro will then begin its three-game Mindanao trip this weekend starting on November 9 in Davao City when they visit the Duterte Agilas-Goldstar Hardware.
