Flora: Ground Orchid

Here’s a picture of a Ground Orchid, a white variety with a scientific name of Spathoglottis Plicata.

What’s interesting about it is that, compared to the usual epiphyte orchids (or air plant orchids, those that hang on tree branches in rain forests), ground orchids adapted to the soil by having a different type of leaf. It’s leaf texture is like that of palm leaves rather than the waxy orchid leaves. It also is much thinner and more water proof. That way, they become more resilient to ground fungus and over-watering.

Flora: A Budding Torch

Here’s a snapshot of a budding Torch Ginger , scientific name of Etlingera Elatior. Yes, that one is still budding as a fully opened Torch Ginger looks like a big red pineapple sitting in layers of petals. I’ll try to get a picture of that soon.

This is what is commonly known as Shrimp Plant. Its scientific name is Justicia Brandegeana. On some angle, it does look like shrimp to me, shrimp covered in curry that is.

An image of Vanda Sanderiana or what is commonly known as Waling-Waling. To me, they actually look like pink lions greeting the sun with their yawn.

With a scientific name of Hibiscus Rosa-sinensis Linn, this red Hibiscus or Gumamela reaches towards the sky with its stamen that look like cheerleaders raising up their yellow pompoms.

Kaliwat Ensemble at Taboan

I had dinner with friends at Taboan, Matina Town Square and witnessed a performance which had a strong political message: To live in Mindanao in harmony amidst diversity. The group comprised of people from different ethnicity and religion and a play was presented, laying down different opinions expressed by Mindanaoans.

A friend from Manila was impressed at the value of their play, expressed in arts and music. It is truly a creative way of performing for a cause.

Davao City High Gate

I was riding a tricycle across F. Torres St. when I took this picture of Davao City High’s Gate. As an alumnus my self, I remember when we crowed the gate, racing against time (and space) for the morning

Many who have entered this gate are now professionals on top their career around the world. It is probably the most populated national high school in the city.

These two guys can’t wait to get of the campus and probably be with their friends. Free at last!! (for the day at least)
